New Delhi: A B.Sc Nursing graduate has been arrested by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Delhi Police for allegedly duping unemployed youths on the false promise of jobs at Guru Teg Bahadur (GTB) Hospital. Police said the accused used the money to fuel his gambling addiction.The accused, Manish Kumar, had allegedly been on the run for months before being traced and arrested from GTB Enclave in Shahdara on June 9.The case was registered following complaints from 23 people, who alleged that Kumar promised to secure them jobs as data entry operators and nursing assistants at GTB Hospital.Additional Commissioner of Police (EOW) Ravi Kumar Singh said, “The accused claimed there were contractual vacancies with a monthly salary of around Rs 21,000. He told aspirants that his father held a senior post at the hospital and that he had strong connections within the administration to facilitate appointments.”Believing his claims, the victims submitted copies of their educational certificates, Aadhaar and PAN cards, along with other personal documents. “Kumar collected between Rs 20,000 and Rs 25,000 from each applicant as a ‘security deposit’. He continued to assure them that the recruitment process was underway, later claiming that vacancies had been temporarily put on hold and promising appointment letters within 45 days,” the officer said.However, the promised jobs never materialised. When applicants repeatedly followed up, Kumar allegedly stopped responding to calls, switched off his phone and went into hiding. The victims subsequently approached the police.Investigations revealed that no such recruitment process was underway at GTB Hospital during the period in question. Hospital authorities confirmed that neither Kumar nor anyone else had been authorised to arrange jobs on their behalf.Analysis of bank records showed that the complainants had transferred money into accounts linked to the accused. Police said the fraud amounted to around Rs 5.5 lakh.During the probe, officers found that Kumar, a B.Sc Nursing graduate, had allegedly incurred debts due to gambling and alcohol use and resorted to the scam to raise money. A special EOW team tracked him down after he changed locations multiple times to evade arrest.
