Athgaon ROB shut from Friday night, major traffic diversions announced

Guwahati: The traffic through the Assam Trunk Road will remain diverted from June 27 night to June 29 for repairing and restoration of the approaches to the Railway Over Bridge (ROB) at Athgaon area, one of the busiest commercial locality in the city.DCP (traffic) Jayanta sarathi Bora on Thursday, while issuing an advisory, stated that the ROB along with the approaches on either side and service roads connecting both the ends of the ROB will be completely closed for traffic movement from both the ends for all kind of vehicular movement as well as for all kinds of pedestrian till the completion of the work.Public Works Department (Roads) will carry on the repairing and restoration work from 11 PM on June 27 to 6 AM on June 29.Executive engineer of Guwahati Central Territorial Road Division, Pranjal Bhattacharya said, “The approaches have deteriorated significantly due to heavy water trucks travelling from Santipur, Bharalumukh, Kedar Road and Machkhowa via Fakharuddin Ali Ahmed Road and then turning onto the bridge.”He added that the repair work was initially scheduled for June 20 and 21, but permission was deferred due to the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) scheduled for that Sunday. “Weekend has been choosen for the work as the traffic or the commercial activity remains less during the weekend,” he added.The upcoming restoration will involve excavation of the flyover’s broken approaches. Bhattacharya said that the freshly laid road will need time to stabilise otherwise the road might get damaged again if movement of heavy water tanks is allowed soon after the repairing.As per the traffic advisory, people coming from KC Choudhary Road (Chatribari) towards Bharalumukh will be diverted at Himatsinka Petrol Pump towards Paltan Bazar via AT Road. Motorists coming from Paltan Bazar via AT Road will be diverted at Vishal Point through Pan Bazar ROB on Moti Lal Nehru Road towards MG Road. Vehicles coming from the Bhoothnath side towards MG Road and AT Road will be diverted at Machkhowa Point via MG Road, BRP Road and the Dinesh Goswami Flyover. Motorists coming from Reserve Bank of India and Paltan Bazar Railway Station heading towards Bharalumukh will be diverted at Vishal Point via the Pan Bazar ROB towards MG Road via Moti Lal Nehru Road.Traffic police have warned that severe congestion is likely on all connected routes during this period. Commuters are advised to plan their journeys in advance and completely avoid the Athgaon ROB stretch by utilizing these alternative routes.
