Lucknow: The Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical University (ABVMU) will soon establish its own medical college with an initial intake of 100 MBBS students.The announcement was made by vice-chancellor Maj Gen (Dr) Amit Devgan during the university’s second convocation on Wednesday. Currently, the university only grants affiliation to medical, nursing and paramedical colleges in the state.Deputy chief minister Brajesh Pathak and minister of state Mayankeshwar Sharan Singh were special guests on the occasion.Devgan said the proposal for the medical college has been sent to the state govt and approval is awaited. The proposed campus will also offer BSc Nursing and paramedical courses besides providing affordable healthcare services.The vice-chancellor said timely conduct of entrance examinations, admissions, annual examinations and declaration of results remained among the university’s top priorities.A total of 11,053 students received degrees, including 7,618 women and 3,435 men. Women accounted for 69% of the graduating students.Devgan also announced periodic training programmes for teachers of nursing and paramedical institutions to improve teaching standards and update them on modern treatment techniques.He said a medical research committee has been formed to provide research grants to MBBS students and faculty members.The university will also launch the ‘Skill on Wheels’ project, under which two buses will visit nursing colleges across the state to conduct three-day practical training sessions. A skill laboratory will also be set up on the university campus.Surgeon Vice Admiral Krishna M Adhikari, who was the chief guest on the occasion, said medical professionals should keep pace with emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, while stressing that patient care and trust should remain at the center of medical practice.BOX‘New institution willstrengthen medical edu’Deputy chief minister Brajesh Pathak said the proposed medical college would strengthen medical education in the state and increase the number of qualified doctors.He said students would receive practical training in modern medical facilities while patients would have access to specialist treatment at affordable rates.
