Aizawl: Mizoram’s literacy rate has reached 99.8%, state officials said on Tuesday as the govt marked International Literacy Day and renewed efforts to bring the remaining non-literate adults into literacy programmes.The state-level programme marking the 60th anniversary of International Literacy Day was held at Directorate of School Education in Aizawl. School education commissioner and secretary K Lalthawmmawia said community participation and volunteerism had played a key role in Mizoram’s literacy progress.A message from school education minister Vanlalthlana was read out at the programme. The minister called for continued cooperation among the govt, churches and civil society organisations. He said literacy initiatives should also cover digital skills, vocational training and environmental conservation.Mizoram was declared India’s first fully literate state under the ULLAS initiative on May 20, 2025. The govt is now working to bring the remaining non-literate adults into literacy programmes ahead of Census 2027.The programme also saw the launch of ULLAS-RAERIP worksheets, 2026-27 Skill Training Programme and the “220 Schools Go Live” initiative.
