Aizawl: The Assam Regiment celebrated its 85th Raising Day at the War Memorial at Treasury Square in Aizawl on Monday. This is the first time the Assam Regiment is celebrating the occasion in Mizoram.The day-long event was attended by Mizoram Ex Servicemen League (MESL) president Lt Col Clement Lalhmingthanga, and Brig Puspendar Sorayan, DIG, HQ 23 Sector Assam Rifles. Other attendees included former Assam Regiment soldiers, their family members, ex-servicemen and Assam Rifles personnel.Addressing the gathering, Lt Col Lalhmingthanga said the Assam Regiment occupies a special place in the hearts of the Mizo people. Brig Sorayan extended greeting to the Assam Regiment and appealed to the current personnel to continue serving the nation. He also appealed to the people to remember the fallen heroes of the Assam Regiment.The Assam Regiment was raised on June 15, 1941, in Shillong by Major (later Brigadier) Ross Cosens Howman OBE, to meet the claim of the then undivided state of Assam for its own fighting unit and to counter the threat of the Japanese invasion of India during World War II.
