Dibrugarh: A district-level border coordination meeting between Assam’s Jorhat district and Nagaland’s Mokokchung district was held at Mangkolemba in Mokokchung to strengthen peace and cooperation along the inter-state border.The meeting was jointly chaired by Jorhat district commissioner Jay Shivani and Mokokchung deputy commissioner Ajit Kumar Verma on Friday. Senior police and civil officials from both districts, including Jorhat SSP Subhrajyoti Bora and Mokokchung SSP Vesupra Kezo, attended the meeting.Members of the Border Peace Coordination Committee, a voluntary citizens’ body working to promote peace and goodwill among communities along the Assam-Nagaland border, were also present.Officials said the meeting was part of the ongoing coordination mechanism between the administrations of Assam and Nagaland to address local issues along the border and prevent disputes from escalating.The Jorhat-Nagaland border stretches around 128.5 km, of which nearly 101 km falls in the disputed belt, according to officials. Areas along Jorhat’s southern border, including Mariani, Nakachari and Seleng Hat, have witnessed tensions in the past over boundary-related issues.At the meeting, officials from both sides stressed the need to keep communication channels open and resolve emerging issues through dialogue. They also agreed to continue holding periodic coordination meetings to review the ground situation and strengthen peaceful coexistence among border communities.Members of the Border Peace Coordination Committee said grassroots-level trust-building remained crucial for maintaining peace in the region.“Regular dialogue between the two administrations is essential to ensure that minor issues do not escalate into larger conflicts. Today’s meeting was a step towards reinforcing trust and cooperation between border communities,” an Assam official who attended the meeting said.
