GUWAHATI: Assam’s flood situation remained critical on Monday, with the death toll rising to 100 after two more fatalities were reported in the past 24 hours, while nearly 1.4 lakh people across seven districts continued to be affected by the deluge, according to an official bulletin.The two latest deaths were reported from Golaghat and Karbi Anglong districts, taking the total number of flood-related fatalities in the state this year to 100, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said.Several rivers are flowing above their danger levels, raising concerns that floodwaters could spread to newer areas, an ASDMA official said.According to the authority’s latest flood report, 456 villages are currently inundated and 11,933.46 hectares of crop area have been damaged across the state.More than 1,37,500 people are affected in Charaideo, Darrang, Golaghat, Jorhat, Karbi Anglong, Nagaon and Sivasagar districts.Golaghat remains the worst-affected district, with nearly 70,000 people affected by the floods. Sivasagar has reported nearly 40,000 affected people, while more than 16,000 people are affected in Jorhat.The Dhansiri river at Golaghat and Numaligarh and the Kushiyara river at Sribhumi are flowing above the danger mark, according to ASDMA.“Due to a steady rise in the water level of Dhansiri in Golaghat district, people have been advised to stay away from the river,” an ASDMA official said.The state administration is currently operating 125 relief camps and relief distribution centres across six districts, providing assistance to 49,061 people, ASDMA said.The flood situation remains under close watch as water levels in several rivers continue to rise.(With PTI inputs)
