Assam CM reports major gains in crime control, Convictions

Guwahati: Assam has transformed its criminal justice system over the past five years, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Friday.Sharing an infographic titled “Assam’s Criminal Justice Transformation (2021–2026 up to June)” on ‘X’, Sarma said sustained policing and justice-delivery reforms had sharply reduced crime and case pendency while improving chargesheet and conviction rates. The govt data showed crime registration falling from 1,33,239 cases in 2021 to 20,582 till June 2026, an 85% drop. Cases under investigation declined from 1,33,982 to 10,486, down 92%.The chargesheet rate rose from 39.4% to 86.6%, while the conviction rate climbed from 6.1% to 25.3%. The crime rate per lakh population fell from 379 to 112.Sources attributed the gains to closer monitoring of investigations, faster filing of chargesheets, better police-prosecution coordination, greater use of scientific investigation and timely disposal of cases. However, the 2026 figures cover only the period till June, while the 2021 baseline is for a full year. Year-end data would offer a fuller comparison. NCRB data has also shown a decline in Assam’s overall crime rate in recent years, though it uses a different methodology.
