Guwahati: Mariani BJP MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi and his wife, Manchuria, on Tuesday pledged to donate their organs after death, signing the pledge forms at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) as part of the state-wide Seva Sankalp Abhiyan.The initiative was organised to mark Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s 76th birthday and followed an appeal by Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma.The couple signed the forms in the presence of GMCH superintendent Dr Devajit Choudhury and a team of doctors. Kurmi said they felt grateful to take the pledge and urged others to come forward.“There can be no greater donation than organ donation,” Kurmi wrote in a social media post. “If light enters someone else’s life even after our death, that would be the highest fulfillment of human life,” he said.He further added, “Let us all step forward to pledge organ donation and keep the hope of a new life burning.”Explaining the decision, Kurmi said, “Whatever opportunity we have today to serve people is because of nara and Narayan — Narayan being God and nara representing the people. We believe that if we can do something meaningful for society, even in life or after death, our contribution will be remembered. With this thought, and in connection with the Prime Minister’s 76th birthday and the ongoing Seva Sankalp Abhiyan, we decided to pledge our organs for donation.”Kurmi said Modi had highlighted in his Mann Ki Baat programme that people often lose their lives in accidents, illnesses, sports-related incidents and other circumstances, while some of their organs may remain healthy and could help save others.BJP Yuva Morcha member Manash Protim Mahanta also pledged to donate his organs.Dr Choudhury said a single organ donor could potentially save up to eight lives through the donation of vital organs, including the heart, lungs, kidneys and pancreas. He described the initiative as a noble act that could encourage more people to pledge their organs.Since the establishment of the Regional Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation at GMCH, five people have donated their organs through body donation, Dr Choudhury added.
