Ahmedabad: The state govt on Wednesday appointed Surat police commissioner Anupam Singh Gahlaut as the new Ahmedabad police commissioner. The post was vacant since the elevation of G S Malik as Gujarat’s new DGP on June 6.A notification issued by principal secretary, home department, Sanjeev Kumar, said Gahlaut has been appointed Ahmedabad city police commissioner after the ex-cadre post in the director general of police grade was downgraded to a cadre post in the additional director general of police grade.Gahlaut, a 1997-batch IPS officer, has been serving as Surat police commissioner since April 2024. Before that, he headed Vadodara city police as commissioner and has held several key policing assignments during his career.Gahlaut now takes charge of policing Ahmedabad, Gujarat’s largest city, which has witnessed growing challenges related to cybercrime, traffic management, organised crime and public order. Ahmedabad city police is among the state’s largest police commissionerates, overseeing law and order across multiple zones and catering to a population of several million.
