Bengaluru: After demolishing Jayadeva flyover for an interchange Metro station and marking Delmia flyover for removal under a double-decker corridor plan on Outer Ring Road, the city is set to raze another flyover.Bengaluru Smart Infrastructure Limited (B-Smile) has identified a contractor to build a Rs 436-crore elevated rotary flyover at the busy IOC Junction. The existing flyover will be dismantled to facilitate construction of the new one. The railways had built the flyover in 2001-02.The demolition, however, is expected to trigger disruptions, particularly along Dodda Banaswadi Road, Byappanahalli Road, Kammanahalli Road, and other connecting stretches in east Bengaluru, which already experience heavy traffic. A traffic plan in coordination with various agencies will be prepared before B-Smile, which was formed to implement large-scale projects in the city such as tunnel roads and elevated corridors, takes up the new project. At the same time, B-Smile is planning construction of a railway overbridge at Byappanahalli Road connecting with Old Madras Road. An additional railway overbridge would benefit passengers travelling to Sir M Visvesvaraya Terminal, which has become one of the busiest railway stations in the city.A B-Smile official said work orders would be issued shortly for the elevated rotary project. “The project is aimed at easing congestion in east Bengaluru and providing seamless access to Sir M Visvesvaraya Terminal, which was opened in 2022 but is plagued by inadequate last-mile connectivity due to narrow approach roads. Currently, city bus services operate from Old Madras Road side, while connectivity from other directions remains poor. The new elevated rotary flyover will provide seamless access to the terminal from all directions,” the official said. The new road infrastructure would ease congestion in Maruthi Seva Nagar, Kammanahalli Main Road, Dodda Banaswadi, Byappanahalli Road and other connecting stretches.Initially, the rotary flyover was proposed at an estimated cost of Rs 263 crore in 2023. When asked about the cost escalation, the official said changes in the project plan, GST additions, and other components led to the increase. “Construction of the 1.5km flyover from Maruthi Seva Nagar Road was not part of the original plan. This will help segregate local traffic from long-distance commuters heading to the rail terminal. Construction of the railway overbridge will also ease congestion from SV Road Metro station side to Byappanahalli terminal,” the official explained.K-Ride, which is executing the Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project through the IOC Junction, has given its NOC for construction of the rotary flyover. However, with multiple operational railway lines in the vicinity, executing the project will be a challenging task.
