Ahmedabad: Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s (AMC) Asset Monetisation Cell, set up in March 2025, has appointed a consultant to devise strategies to generate revenue from civic properties. In the first phase, the consultant will look at monetising over 209 properties, including 20 gardens, 25 schools, 50 party plots/community halls and 10 lakes.AMC plans to generate revenue by setting up amusement parks or food courts on land parcels in city gardens and around lakes. The management of community halls and party plots may be handed over to private contractors, officials said, adding that school buildings will also be rented out during non-operational hours and private buses may be allowed to run on BRTS corridors. The cell has so far surveyed 450 school buildings, 295 gardens, 95 party plots/community halls, 64 library buildings, 39 gymnasiums, 3,778 property units leased out across 150 locations, 1,405 units in vegetable markets across 12 locations, 2,268 plots suitable for short-term rental, 226 shops across three locations and 92 lakes. The consultant will also inspect spaces beneath bridges, in parking lots, vending areas and advertising sites. In the first phase, around 209 of these properties have been selected for monetisation. The AMC estimates the total valuation of these properties to be over Rs 2,000 crore. The cell is also evaluating strategies to monetise reserve plots meant for sale by developing them under a public-private partnership (PPP) model. The cell committee is headed by the municipal commissioner, and the deputy municipal commissioners (projects, estate, finance and legal), estate officer, head of the non-tax revenue department, chief city planner, chief accountant and deputy accountant. In 2020, the state govt implemented a policy allowing tenants to buy AMC properties currently held on lease. However, tenants have shown no interest in the offer. The properties include those at the Municipal Market on CG Road, the mutton market in Mirzapur and the fruit market in Kalupur. The AMC has leased out 4,113 properties in the city.
