Sivasagar: Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuva Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) members on Monday held a protest rally in Sivasagar demanding compensation and rehabilitation for families affected by the July 19 floods.Led by president Palash Changmai, the rally highlighted the continuing difficulties faced by people whose homes, agricultural land, livelihoods and property were damaged.Assam govt earlier announced interim assistance of Rs 15,000 for each flood-affected family in Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat and Golaghat. The funds were subsequently released to beneficiaries through direct benefit transfer. However, AJYCP alleged that several flood-affected families did not receive the assistance. It demanded that govt identify all genuine beneficiaries and ensure that the aid reaches them.“Although govt announced compensation for the flood-affected people, many families who suffered losses are still waiting for assistance. Every affected family must receive govt compensation. No family that has suffered damage should be left out,” Changmai said. The organisation also demanded proper rehabilitation for affected families. It called for a fresh assessment wherever necessary and urged the authorities to expedite the compensation and rehabilitation process.AJYCP also sought long-term measures to address Assam’s recurring floods, saying the problem required comprehensive planning and permanent solutions.“Floods have become a recurring problem in Assam, and people cannot be made to suffer in the same manner every year. Govt must take long-term measures to address the problem while ensuring immediate compensation and rehabilitation for those affected,” Changmai said.
