Ahmedabad: Three of a family killed as speeding pickup mows down motorcycle

Ahmedabad: Three members of a family, including a 6-year-old child, were killed in a horrific road accident after a speeding pickup vehicle rammed into their motorcycle on the Lakhtar-Viramgam highway near Kameejla village on Friday. The impact was so severe that one of the victims’ limbs was severed, police said.The deceased were identified as Alpesh Meniya, 22, his mother Santok Meniya, 40, and her granddaughter Manvi Meniya, 6, all residents of Kalyanpura village in Lakhtar taluka of Surendranagar district. The family was travelling towards Viramgam when the accident occurred between Kameejla and Vanthal villages.According to police, a Bolero pickup vehicle hit the motorcycle from behind at high speed, crushing it completely. The collision was so intense that all three victims died on the spot. Santok suffered catastrophic injuries, with one of her legs being severed from the body due to the force of the impact.Locals said the family was on its way to Nabhoi when the accident occurred. The accident drew a large crowd from nearby villages, who rushed to the spot upon hearing the loud crash. Emergency services were alerted, and injured persons were shifted to a nearby hospital in 108 ambulances.The driver of the pickup vehicle fled the scene immediately after the accident, abandoning the victims. Police registered a case against the unidentified driver and launched a manhunt.Officials from Viramgam police said efforts are underway to trace the accused using CCTV footage and other technical evidence. “The vehicle involved is suspected to be a Bolero pickup. We are scanning footage from nearby routes to identify and apprehend the driver,” an officer said.The stretch of the Lakhtar-Viramgam highway has witnessed multiple accidents in recent months, raising concerns about speeding and lack of enforcement.Police said further investigation is in progress, and strict action will be taken against the accused once he is traced.
