Ahmedabad: Domestic help steals ₹48L jewellery, ₹1.4L cash from Paldi home

Ahmedabad: A domestic worker employed at the Paldi residence of a textile trader allegedly fled with gold jewellery and cash with a total value of Rs 50 lakh after accessing the family’s bedroom cupboards, police said. Karan Shah, who runs Neera Textile Corporation at New Cloth Market in Sarangpur, lodged a complaint at Paldi police station. The complaint states that four domestic workers from Rajasthan — two men and two women — were staying at the house. One of them had joined the household in March. The theft came to light on July 9 when Karan’s wife, Malvika, noticed Rs 16,000 missing from her purse. The family did not immediately pursue the matter. On July 13, she found Rs 1.3 lakh missing from a cupboard that was accessible to the workers. The couple then checked the cupboards in their bedroom and found around 602 grams of gold jewellery, valued at Rs 48.1 lakh, and Rs 1.4 lakh in cash missing. The stolen items include diamond-studded necklaces, bangles, chains, bracelets, earrings, polki sets and other ornaments gifted to the couple at their wedding and after the birth of their daughter. When the family questioned the workers, they found that the person who had joined in March had disappeared. The worker allegedly said he was leaving for his village and disconnected the call. Police said a search of his belongings led to the recovery of an Indonesian currency note that had been kept in the cupboard with the jewellery.
