Ahmedabad: The Abhayam 181 women’s helpline on Wednesday intervened in a family dispute in an eastern part of the city after a senior citizen sought assistance following an altercation with her daughter-in-law.A counselling team reached the residence and spoke to the complainant, who said her son had entered into a love marriage 22 days ago. As the marriage had taken place against the wishes of the bride’s family, the couple left their respective homes and got married. According to counsellors, the dispute primarily revolved around household responsibilities. The senior citizen alleged that her daughter-in-law woke up late and used inappropriate language during arguments. She also claimed that the daughter-in-law had been pressuring her to transfer the family property in her name. Following repeated disputes, the elderly woman’s health reportedly deteriorated. The daughter-in-law, however, alleged harassment by her in-laws and sought police intervention. Counsellors spoke to both sides, informed them of their legal rights, and encouraged dialogue to resolve their differences.Following the counselling session, the family agreed to be more considerate towards each other and give the relationship time before taking any decision to separate. The daughter-in-law also expressed her willingness to return to her parental home if the situation does not improve, counsellors said.
