Ludhiana: Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) has developed an innovative seed delivery system to promote kitchen gardening and simplify vegetable cultivation for urban households. The technology features specially designed sowing packets for small-seeded crops—such as brinjal, tomato, and cauliflower—allowing users to plant seeds directly without manual handling.Director of research Dr Ajmer Singh Dhatt shared that the technology target apartment dwellers and gardening enthusiasts who struggle with handling tiny, expensive seeds. The system simplifies sowing, improves handling, and significantly reduces seed wastage.Explaining the mechanism, director (seeds) Dr Amandeep Singh Brar informed that a small quantity of seeds is enclosed in these specialised packets, which are placed directly into containers or grow bags and covered with 1–2 cm of soil. Each packet produces three to four healthy seedlings that can either remain in the same container or be transplanted elsewhere.PAU scientists Dr Navjyot Kaur and Dr Anju Bala noted that the innovation encourages households to grow fresh, pesticide-free vegetables using limited spaces like balconies, rooftops, and courtyards. Following this rollout, the university plans to expand the direct-sowing packet range to include other vegetable and ornamental flower varieties.Varsity vice-chancellor Dr Satbir Singh Gosal expressed confidence that this consumer-friendly innovation will motivate more families to adopt kitchen gardening, helping them enjoy safe, home-grown produce while contributing to sustainable urban living.
