Billy Gardell recently opened up about the health problems that eventually led him to undergo bariatric surgery, saying the procedure “probably saved my life” after he was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and began dealing with other health concerns. The Mike & Molly star recently discussed his health journey during an appearance on Tom Papa’s Breaking Bread podcast. Gardell looked back at the years when he carried considerably more weight and explained why he eventually realised that exercise alone could no longer control his health problems.

Billy Gardell says he could not outrun his health problems

Gardell explained that he had managed to live with his weight for years, partly because he had been physically active when he was younger. He said genetics and playing sports had helped him cope with being overweight for a long time, but eventually those advantages were no longer enough. Speaking to podcast co-host Tom Papa, Gardell said: “You can’t outrun those. I think the only reason I was able to survive as long as I did is one, I got decent genetics, and two was I played some sports when I was younger. So I was a big fat guy, but I was a pretty solid fat guy, and I could carry the weight for a long time, but eventually you can’t outrun that.”The comment came as Gardell discussed the health issues that had started catching up with him. Along with Type two diabetes, he mentioned having cholesterol and heart-related concerns. He also recalled his doctor’s blunt observation that “after 50 the warranties start running out.” For Gardell, the situation became even more difficult when he injured his knee. He said the injury reached a point where he could no longer walk for exercise, forcing him to consider a more drastic solution. “I got to the point where I hurt my knee, and I couldn’t even walk for exercise, and I was like, I have to do something drastic,” he said. His doctor had already made the situation clear: “You have to do something.”

Billy Gardell says weight-loss surgery probably saved his life

Gardell eventually underwent bariatric surgery in 2021. Looking back several years later, he believes the decision had a profound effect on his health. “So I got the surgery, and it’s been a couple years now and I probably saved my life,” Gardell said. He also said that “I’m not on any medication. Diabetes is gone.” The weight-loss procedure also changed the way he approaches food. Gardell explained that he now has to be much more selective about what he eats because he can only consume a limited amount at once. “I only have 12 ounces to work with,” he said. He joked that the desire to overeat has not completely disappeared, referring to the “fat Hulk” that still wants to indulge.

Billy Gardell says he was on Ozempic for a year to treat diabetes

Gardell’s path to better health included medication before his later surgery. In a first-person interview with diaTribe, he discussed using Ozempic as part of a broader Type 2 diabetes management program involving exercise, meal planning and coaching. He said at the time that he had been taking the medication for “about 10 or 11 months.” He also described how treatment changed his understanding of food and his daily routine. Gardell said he had begun viewing food differently and noticed that he no longer felt as lethargic after meals. He explained that he used a blood glucose meter every day to understand how different foods affected his blood sugar. That earlier experience became part of a much longer process of learning how to manage his health. The diaTribe interview also shows that Gardell was open about the emotional side of receiving a diabetes diagnosis. He said hearing the diagnosis was frightening, especially because his father had Type 2 diabetes. The weight loss gave Billy Gardell back everyday freedomsFor Gardell, the transformation has not been limited to medical results or the number on a weighing scale. He talked about being able to hike with his wife and shop for clothes without facing the same physical limitations he once experienced. These may sound like ordinary activities, but Gardell said they have taken on a completely different meaning after his weight loss. “It’s just those little freedoms that you go, ‘Wow, man. I’m so grateful I can do this now,'” he said.“I know those are simple, stupid things, but they mean the world to me.” Gardell has also said that his family played a major role in his decision to take his health seriously. His wife, Patty Knight, and their son, William, were among the reasons he wanted to make a lasting change.

Billy Gardell’s health journey became about more than weight

Gardell’s comments show that his transformation was not one single decision. Medication, changes to his eating habits, exercise and eventually surgery all became parts of a longer process. He also continues working in comedy, giving him another outlet to talk about the experiences that have shaped him. Looking back, Gardell’s message is not simply about losing weight. His own account is about reaching a point where his health could no longer be ignored, making a difficult decision and discovering how much ordinary life could change afterwards. For Gardell, the biggest reward may be the freedom to move, spend time with his family and enjoy everyday experiences again.
