Activists urge halt to tree felling in Panaji

Panaji: The Goa Green Brigade has urged the Panaji range forest office to stop the “clandestine butchering” of heritage roadside trees and adopt a scientific conservation policy, while warning of legal action if scheduled tree work continues.Activists have also sought a halt to the Corporation of the City of Panaji’s plan to trim or fell 173 trees, alleging that 22 trees have already been cut without proper arboricultural assessment. Environmental activist Avertino Miranda said neither the CCP nor the forest department has qualified arborists and called for expert evaluation of each tree before any action. The group cited alleged violations of National Green Tribunal norms on tree base protection and said improper pruning practices were making trees unsafe. Panaji resident Chryselle Dias said they would approach the high court if the felling is not stopped.
