Jaisalmer: Protests led by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) in Jaisalmer intensified Wednesday, entering their third consecutive day. Student representatives commenced an indefinite hunger strike outside City Kotwali Police Station alleging police misconduct during the prior intimation process for a Kargil Vijay Diwas Tiranga Yatra.Former Students’ Union President Mahendra Singh Karra initiated the hunger strike Tuesday, joined by ABVP Department Convener Karnpal Singh Kotra Wednesday morning. Their key demand is the immediate suspension of SHO Surjaram Jakhar and Head Constable Dipendra Singh Shekhawat, who are accused of misbehaving with students.Political support for the protest has been bolstered, with Jaisalmer MLA Chhotu Singh Bhati and Pokhran MLA Pratap Puri Maharaj among the BJP members visiting the site to engage with demonstrators. Concurrently, Sheo MLA Ravindra Singh Bhati criticised the administration, questioning the denial of permission for the Veer Shaheed Samman Yatra and condemning the detention of students.Superintendent of Police Abhishek Shivhare defended the police’s actions, stating ABVP activists were only inside the police station for 11 minutes on July 26, and insisted that permissions for the Yatra were duly granted. He noted that no formal complaints of misconduct were lodged but promised to thoroughly investigate any that arise.SHO Surjaram Jakhar refuted the allegations, arguing that police were merely directing activists to the Sub-Divisional Magistrate for necessary permissions.
