Ahmedabad: Gujarat has recorded 19 police-firing incidents since May 2025, with Ahmedabad emerging as the most frequent location on the list, accounting for five cases. The offences span murder, rape, extortion, liquor offences, weapon recovery and cases involving history-sheeters.Rape-related offences account for five of the 19 incidents, the largest single category among those shot at, with murder cases forming the next-largest group. In several instances, police claimed the accused had attacked officers with knives, stones or concealed weapons.In others, firing was reported after alleged attempts to snatch service revolvers or flee custody. The episodes have involved different units, though local police and Crime Branch teams account for most of them.State Monitoring Cell was involved in the March firing in Arvalli, while police teams in Surat, Rajkot, Gandhinagar, Navsari and Dahod had also opened fire in separate cases over the past 15 months.Ahmedabad’s cases have drawn particular attention, including firing during the production of the accused in court, arrest operations and crime-scene reconstruction. On July 2, Crime Branch JCP Sharad Singhal opened fire after alleged history-sheeter Kaleem Pathan allegedly slashed him near Chandola lake.A reading of the case documents suggests the explanation offered remains broadly similar across incidents. Police say firing became necessary when the accused attacked officers, attempted to seize their weapons or tried to escape.
