Guwahati: Assam governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya paid tribute to Bhupen Hazarika as the All Assam Students’ Union (Aasu) renewed demands to preserve the music icon’s legacy.Acharya offered floral tributes at Hazarika’s statue at Dighalipukhuri on Tuesday and attended an event organised by Aasu.“His music, deeply rooted in the soil of Assam and enriched by the spirit of the Brahmaputra, continues to transcend boundaries and unite people across generations and areas. Through his voice and music he beautifully gave expression to the inherent thoughts and spirit of countless people. His songs brought people closer,” Acharya said.Aasu chief adviser Samujjal Bhattacharya renewed the union’s five-point charter of demands. It sought the inclusion of Hazarika’s works in educational curricula and chairs in his name at Gauhati, Dibrugarh and Tezpur universities, along with faster research on his life and contributions.Aasu also called for similar initiatives at major universities nationwide, an international-level research institution named after Hazarika and the renaming of Guwahati railway station as Bhupen Hazarika Railway Terminus.It demanded the expansion and comprehensive redevelopment of Hazarika’s Samadhi Kshetra at Jalukbari so visitors could learn about his legacy.Acharya also planted a sapling at Dighalipukhuri and later paid floral tributes at Lok Bhavan, where officers and staff joined him.
