Rejinagar: Skipping Shaktipur police’s summons for questioning over his provocative public speeches, Nowda MLA and AJUP chairman Humayun Kabir attended jumma namaz at the proposed ‘Babri Masjid’ near Maradighi on Friday.Kabir followed it up with a threat to gherao Shaktipur PS and called its OC a “goon” in police uniform.On June 30, a day after CM Suvendu Adhikari’s warning, police served notices at Kabir’s Manikyahar residence, directing him to appear at Shaktipur PS on July 3 and Rejinagar PS on July 4. Three AJUP netas were also arrested.After offering namaz, Kabir met the press. “I will reach Rejinagar PS at 11.30 am on Saturday. I was not ready to attend Shaktipur PS as the OC misbehaved, threatened and insulted my party workers. My father died on Dec 7, 2007 but the officer is threatening and insulting AJUP workers, identifying himself as ‘Humayun Kabirer baap’,” he said.“I had used a colloquial term that was also used by the Suri MLA-cum-state higher education minister earlier. The police administration did not take any action against panchayat and rural development minister Dilip Ghosh, who said the Muslim community has no right to offer namaz on Red Road, and if they wish, they can move to other countries. Isn’t that a sensational or communal speech?” he added.Kabir said it was “too early” to comment on the ‘anti-goon’ bill. “We supported it from the beginning in the hope that goons and anti-social activities would be controlled. There are some stages yet to make it an act. According to law, police will execute it, but what if police role becomes like that of a goon? What if it is misused against netas for political vendetta?” he asked.Kabir said they would gherao Shaktipur PS “to protest the OC’s money extortion and misbehaviour and also file a case in Calcutta High Court”.Anamika Ghosh, BJP’s Behrampore general secretary, said: “Kabir is trying to mislead a community but they have already realised that and will not follow his provocative instructions.”
