Cyclone Murasu forms over Bay of Bengal, no major impact on state

Kolkata: Even as a deep depression over southeast Bay of Bengal has given birth to cyclonic storm Murasu, the system is unlikely to have any significant impact on Kolkata and the rest of Bengal. This is the second cyclone to form over the Bay in less than a week.“This system is very likely to move west-northwestwards and intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm over West-central Bay of Bengal around Monday morning. Thereafter, it is very likely to move northwestwards and cross south Andhra Pradesh coast as a severe cyclonic storm with wind speed of 100 to 110 kmph gusting to 120 kmph between Nellore and Narsapur during Monday midnight,” said a special IMD bulletin on Sunday.Last week, a very severe cyclone Arnab had triggered spells of light to moderate rain in parts of south Bengal, including Kolkata. While some districts in south Bengal got intense showers, Kolkata escaped with light rain.“We do not expect any significant impact of Murasu in Bengal and hence there is no weather warning for our state. Even if Kolkata can get one or two spells of rain, the impact will be less than that caused by cyclone Arnab,” said a meteorologist at Regional Meteorological Centre, Kolkata. On Sunday, the system was over southwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal, about 560 km east-southeast of Chennai (Tamil Nadu), 660 km south-southeast of Vishakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), 630 km east-southeast of Nellore (Andhra Pradesh), 640 km southeast of Machilipatnam (Andhra Pradesh) and 680 km east-southeast of Ongole (Andhra Pradesh).Met officials said end-Oct to Dec is cyclone season when these systems may form over Bay of Bengal.
