Dibrugarh: The Dibrugarh district administration on Wednesday carried out an eviction drive along the banks of the Brahmaputra, clearing illegal settlements spreading across 1.5km stretch of govt land.The drive targeted homes and structures that had been unlawfully constructed in the stretch between the Dibrugarh Town Protection dyke and the riverbank, a strip of govt land that over the years had seen a steady mushrooming of unauthorised dwellings.The operation was carried out under the supervision of circle officer Samujjwal Borah of the Dibrugarh East Revenue Circle. Excavators and earthmovers were used to demolish the structures, many of which had stood for years.“Around 1.5km of river bank encroachment were cleared today. This land falls within the embankment protection zone and is critical for flood management. It was under illegal occupation. The encroachment posed a serious risk to the structural integrity of the embankment and to public safety during the monsoon season,” Borah told reporters.Police personnel and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) units were deployed to maintain law and order during the operation.The Dibrugarh Town Protection dyke is a critical flood-control structure that shields large parts of the town from the Brahmaputra’s annual swell during the monsoon. Encroachments in the buffer zone between the embankment and the river have been flagged by engineers as a threat to the embankment’s stability, increasing the risk of breaches during high water flow.District officials said similar eviction drives will be carried out in other encroached stretches along the river in the coming weeks to protect the embankment and restore govt land along the Brahmaputra’s banks.
