Times News NetworkBengaluru: Mount Carmel College (Autonomous) has been conferred deemed-to-be university status, marking a significant milestone for the 78-year-old institution.Addressing the media, Sr Jose Lynette, president of Mount Carmel Educational Society, described the achievement as a historic moment for the institution. She said the new status would significantly enhance the college’s academic and research capabilities, while providing greater autonomy to design programmes that meet emerging educational and industry requirements.“The deemed-to-be university status opens up new possibilities for academic innovation, research collaborations, and global partnerships. It will enable us to offer students a more dynamic and holistic learning experience while staying true to our core values of inclusivity, social responsibility, and excellence,” Sr Jose Lynette said.Founded in 1948, Mount Carmel College is one of the country’s leading institutions for higher education. The women’s college turned co-educational in 2023. The institution currently offers programmes through its school of natural and applied sciences, school of humanities and social sciences, school of commerce, and school of management.Principal George Lekha said the management has invested in land at Devanahalli with plans to develop a residential campus in future, allowing the university to expand its academic offerings and infrastructure.– Nyssa N Jain
