Guwahati: A team of Assam Police from Baksa district arrested a couple in Nashik, Maharashtra, and rescued seven women, including two minors, in an alleged human trafficking operation. The accused were identified as Nabajit Das and his wife Runita Baumatary, residents of Mushalpur town in Baksa district. Police said the couple had been staying in Nashik, where they worked as caretakers at a private resort. They were produced before a local court, which granted two days of police remand.According to Baksa district SSP Ujjal Pratim Baruah, the arrests followed intelligence inputs about women from Meghalaya living in the district under suspicious conditions.“We initially found from a specific intel that some women from Meghalaya were residing in the district under suspicious conditions. Upon verifying we found that two of them, who were minors, were brought here by a middleman,” the SSP said.Baruah said interrogation led police to the couple in Nashik, where five more women were allegedly being kept with plans to sell them. “Our team went there and found that they were planning to sell the women. During the operation, the team also recovered more than Rs 2 lakh in cash from their possession. The women have been rescued and are currently in safe custody,” he said.Police said the case remains under investigation to determine the full extent of the alleged network. Baruah urged guardians to verify employers and workplaces before sending daughters outside the state.
