Mangaluru: Bylaw drafting for the proposed govt medical college in Puttur has begun, with the govt appointing a director of the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences as nodal officer for the project in Bannur village.A committee has been formed to draft the bylaws. Puttur MLA Ashok Kumar Rai said the panel, comprising the minister for medical education, the principal secretary, and senior officials from the finance, planning, and public works departments, will meet in Bengaluru in a few days.

“The committee will discuss creating a separate bylaw for the medical college. The committee will also finalise the name of the medical college and other technical decisions. All aspects related to the construction of the medical college hospital and the medical college will be included in the bylaws. This encompasses planning, implementation, financial matters, management, and other related affairs,” he said.The govt has earmarked Rs 1,000 crore for the project.Work on a 300-bed hospital, estimated at Rs 182 crore, has begun. A detailed project report (DPR) for the medical college building, estimated at Rs 550 crore, is being prepared and will be finalised in the cabinet, Rai said.The academic session is planned for 2028 with 100 seats initially. “We plan to commence the academic year with 100 seats and will add more seats and courses later. All necessary infrastructure, including the students’ hostel will be developed. We have also prepared a master plan, which includes the development of dental, physiotherapy, nursing and other allied sciences as well as hostels for all students. We have also reserved five acres of land to develop an ayurveda college too,” he said.
