42-year-old man dies in fire at Odhav plastic unit; second blaze reported in Narol in Ahmedabad | Ahmedabad News


Ahmedabad: Two major industrial fires struck the city between Friday night and Saturday, leaving one worker dead at a plastic-waste unit in Odhav. A second blaze at a chemical godown in Narol caused heavy smoke but resulted in no casualties.The fatal blaze broke out at approximately 11.50pm on Friday at Ambika Plastic, located behind the Odhav fire station near Jay Chemical. The fire rapidly engulfed plastic waste stored inside an Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation tin-roof shed and an adjoining open plot.

Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services (AFES) deployed 13 vehicles to the scene, including water tankers and specialised bowsers from Nikol, Naroda, Maninagar, and Jashodanagar. While bringing the blaze under control, firefighters discovered a body amid the debris at around 1am during cooling operations.The victim was later identified as 42-year-old Pratab Thakore, a resident of Modasa who worked at the unit. His body was shifted via a 108 ambulance to a local hospital for postmortem. Fire crews remained at the site until the early hours of Saturday to prevent the plastic material from reigniting.

Hours later on Saturday, a second industrial fire was reported at Godown 55 in Balaji Estate on the Narol-Isanpur Road. Chemical substances stored inside the facility caught fire, triggering dense smoke that severely hampered initial firefighting efforts.

Teams from the Aslali fire station rushed to the spot with mini fire appliances and specialised Gajraj vehicles, quickly bringing the situation under control. Fire officials confirmed that no injuries were reported in the Narol incident. The cause of the fire and the extent of financial loss in both cases remain under investigation.
