Dhubri: Guardian minister of Dhubri district Ashok Singhal said re-eviction drives would soon be launched across nearly 50,000 bighas of land in the district. The minister said preparations are already underway as part of CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s plan to free around five lakh bighas of encroached government land across various districts of Assam from new settlers.“Most of the khas (government) lands in the state are under encroachment in Dhubri, Barpeta, and Goalpara districts. At least 50,000 bighas will be freed from new settlers,” Singhal said.He said last year, eviction drives were carried out in 1.5 lakh bighas of land across different districts, including 4,558 bighas under Chapor revenue circle in Dhubri district, where a power plant is coming up soon.Singhal added that since Dhubri is a flood-prone district, a total of 202 villages have been identified as the most affected. To address recurring flood challenges, a fund of Rs 25.63 crore has already been sanctioned for the district.Responding to a question on Dhubri Medical College and Hospital, the minister said the institution was functioning well and that he had personally inspected its operations. He said he had reviewed ongoing development works and implementation of schemes and projects, instructing officials to expedite progress and complete tasks within the stipulated timeframe. As guardian minister, Singhal — who also holds the portfolio of family welfare, health education, and research — held a separate meeting with health officials and directed them to deliver healthcare services to the public with utmost priority.
