Dozen masked men drag youth, thrash him in market, break both legs

Gurgaon: Around a dozen masked men allegedly assaulted a 22-year-old man, hitting him repeatedly with sticks and iron rods before dragging him by a leg along a market road, leaving both his legs fractured in Dabua Colony, Faridabad, Tuesday night. The four-minute assault, captured by a shop’s CCTV camera, took place around 10.30pm near a mosque on Dabua-Ghazipur road when Sagar, a Dabua Colony resident, was returning home with a friend from a shop. The footage shows the attackers surrounding Sagar and knocking before assaulting him. Even as he appeared unconscious, the men continued hitting him intermittently and dragged him by his leg along the road. The attackers also threw stones towards shops in the market during the assault.Several people can be seen standing at a distance in the footage but none intervened. According to his family, Sagar’s legs were fractured, and he suffered serious injuries on his head and elsewhere on the body.“Sagar’s friend fled,” police said, “later, family members rushed the unconscious youth to hospital. Doctors referred him to Delhi for further treatment because he was in a critical condition,” police said.Police suspect the assault may have stemmed from a dispute involving Sagar’s friend. “A preliminary investigation has indicated that the friend had an altercation with some youths a few days before the attack during which Sagar was also present,” an officer said.“CCTV footage from the spot has surfaced, and we are identifying the attackers,” the officer added. Police have been sent to the hospital to record Sagar’s statement. His family had not submitted a written complaint till Tuesday evening, police said.
