VGEC students turn campus walls into tributes to Indian engineering

Ahmedabad: Engineering education usually stays confined to textbooks, lecture halls, and standard laboratory practicals. However, students at Vishwakarma Govt Engineering College (VGEC) in Chandkheda decided to break that mould. Turning ordinary brick and mortar into a massive canvas, they launched a campus-wide mural project under the theme ‘India — Engineering the Future’.Instead of looking at complex technical diagrams on paper, students rolled up their sleeves to paint massive depictions of India’s most ambitious infrastructure and technological milestones. The artwork features prominent developments like the Chenab Rail Bridge, upcoming high-speed bullet trains, the New Pamban Bridge, Vande Bharat locomotives, the Ahmedabad-Dholera corridor, and strides in semiconductor manufacturing. The primary challenge for the student artists was translating heavy technical concepts, equations, and blueprints into intuitive visual stories that anyone walking by could understand instantly. Spearheaded under the guidance of principal V S Purani, the activity aimed to bridge the gap between classroom theory and public communication, proving that engineering can be both creative and visually engaging. To celebrate the effort, the college supplied all necessary painting materials and hosted a competitive evaluation to reward the finest murals, handing out certificates and cash prizes of Rs 3,000, Rs 2,000 and Rs 1,000 to the top three creative entries. What used to be plain, functional campus walls have now become vibrant landmarks, sparking spontaneous conversations among students, faculty, and campus visitors.
