72-year-old Kharar woman loses over Rs 1.09 lakh in e-scooter fraud

Mohali: A 72-year-old woman from Sunny Enclave, Sector 125, Kharar, was allegedly cheated of Rs 1.09 lakh while trying to buy a three-wheeler electric scooter for her husband, who has difficulty walking.The woman, Ranjita Marwaha, wife of Ranjeet Singh, came across an online advertisement for the scooter on Sept 20 and contacted the mobile numbers provided. The callers allegedly posed as representatives of an electric scooter company and a transport firm, offering the vehicle for Rs 28,000.According to her complaint, the accused, identified as Anil, Rakesh and Rajindra, subsequently demanded money in instalments on the pretext of transportation charges, documentation and other expenses. Acting on their instructions, she transferred a total of Rs 1,09,981 to various bank accounts.However, the scooter was never delivered, and the money was not returned. Realising that she had been duped, she approached the police.The cyber crime police station in Sector 79 registered a case against unidentified accused under relevant sections of BNS and Section 66D of the Information Technology Act.Investigating officer Gursimran Veer Singh said police were examining mobile numbers mentioned in the advertisement, the linked bank accounts and the money trail to identify the accused and trace the amount transferred.
