Gorakhpur: The Northeastern Railway (NER) has intensified monitoring and maintenance of drinking water facilities across its network to ensure safe and clean water for passengers, railway employees and their families, said CPRO Sumit Kumar.According to NER, 10,518 overhead water tanks have been installed across its three divisions, including 3,004 in Varanasi, 3,549 in Lucknow and 3,965 in Izzatnagar. Officials said all tanks are being cleaned as per the prescribed schedule and are equipped with functional auto-chlorination systems for continuous disinfection.Residual chlorine and bacteriological testing of drinking water is also being conducted regularly. Health inspectors are collecting samples from water sources and distribution points according to a prescribed sampling protocol.Regular cleaning, disinfection and preventive maintenance of water tanks, coolers, UV/RO systems, filters, taps and pipelines are also being carried out. Medical and engineering teams are conducting inspections and maintenance as per fixed schedules.A comprehensive testing drive is also underway at railway stations, colonies, offices and other railway establishments. Water samples are being tested for chemical and microbiological parameters to ensure compliance with prescribed quality standards.Officials said monitoring mechanisms have been strengthened and necessary instructions issued to concerned departments to improve the effectiveness of the campaign and ensure safe drinking water across the network.“Ensuring access to clean and safe drinking water remains one of the railway’s key priorities,” the CPRO said.
