Tamil Nadu Congress condemns Rahul Gandhi’s arrest, demands removal of CEC
TNCC senior leaders and cadres stage a demonstration in Chennai on Thursday, protesting the arrest of Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and other INDIA bloc leaders and MPs in Delhi. The protesters were detained while marching to the Election Commission demanding the removal of CEC Gyanesh Kumar over allegations of voter-roll manipulation.

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Congress Committee on Thursday held a protest in Chennai condemning the arrest of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and INDIA bloc MPs for organising an agitation demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Congress said INDIA bloc would organise protest meetings across Tamil Nadu on Oct 13 and 14 against the CEC.At the protest on Anna Salai in Chennai, TNCC functionaries raised slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah, accusing BJP-led Union govt of using force to suppress the Opposition. Congress functionaries burnt an effigy and posters carrying images of Modi, Shah and Kumar, causing temporary traffic congestion in the area.The protesters demanded Kumar’s immediate removal, alleging the deletion of 13 crore names from the electoral rolls through SIR across the country was an “unlawful act.”Former TNCC president Thirunavukkarasar said Congress and its allies would continue their agitation until Kumar was removed or resigned. He said Opposition parties were considering measures like approaching Supreme Court seeking Kumar’s removal and moving a resolution in the parliament in this regard when the parliament meets.“Congress will not rest until Gyanesh Kumar is removed from office. Rahul Gandhi has made it clear that the agitation will continue until he is removed,” Thirunavukkarasar said.TN Congress legislature party leader Tharahai Cuthbert, senior leader Peter Alphonse and several other functionaries attended the demo, while ministers Rajesh Kumar and P Viswanathan did not turn up for the demo.
