Inmate’s video call exposes security gaps in central jail in Bengaluru

Bengaluru: The issue of mobile phone use inside the Central Prison at Parappana Agrahara has resurfaced once again after a video showing an undertrial prisoner making a video call from inside his cell went viral on social media.Akbar, 24, was allegedly seen sitting inside the prison and making the video call to his wife, bypassing security checks. The video was reportedly screen-recorded and later posted on Instagram by his wife, along with another clip of his release from the jail recently.According to officials, Akbar was released on bail two days ago, but the viral footage has raised fresh concerns over security lapses inside the high-security prison, despite repeated raids in the last few months.Prison authorities are now verifying the authenticity of the video and probing how the device was smuggled into the jail.“The video that went viral has come to our notice. We are collecting details about the prisoner and when he made the video call,” director general of police (prisons) Alok Kumar said.Akbar, a resident of Govindapura, had been arrested by Parappana Agrahara police in a drug peddling case. Based on inputs from prison officials, a fresh case has been registered against him, and an investigation is under way, a senior officer said.
