Chandigarh: The Lawrence School, Sanawar, one of the world’s oldest co-educational residential schools, commenced its three-day 179th Founder’s Day celebrations on Saturday with a blend of sporting, alumni and cultural events that brought together students, parents, staff and Old Sanawarians (OS) to celebrate the institution’s enduring legacy.The festivities began with friendly sporting contests between Old Sanawarians and Present Sanawarians, including a girls’ basketball match and a boys’ futsal match, rekindling old bonds through competition and camaraderie.One of the most emotional moments of the day was a special assembly for the Jubilee Batches of 1956, 1961, 1966, 1971, 1976, 1996 and 2001 at the historic School Chapel, followed by group photographs at the iconic Golden Staircase. Alumni who had last walked the campus decades ago reunited with classmates and friends, transforming the gathering into a celebration of memories, friendships and the enduring Sanawar spirit.Representatives of the Jubilee Batches also laid a wreath at the War Memorial to honour Old Sanawarians who made the supreme sacrifice in service of the nation. Members of the 1966 batch paid special tribute to their former classmate, Second Lieutenant Arun Khetarpal, Param Vir Chakra awardee.The day also featured a school concert at Barné Hall, where students staged 12 Angry Men, the acclaimed courtroom drama highlighting justice, empathy and independent thinking.Headmaster Ruchi Pradhan Datta said Founder’s Day celebrates the values and traditions that have shaped Sanawar over generations. Old Sanawarian Society president Brig Adarsh Butail (Retd.) said the occasion provides an opportunity to celebrate the school’s heritage and lifelong friendships.The celebrations will continue on Sunday with the annual athletic meet, prize distribution and school fete, before concluding on Monday in the presence of Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Krishna Swaminathan.
