Greater Chennai Corporation enables QR code to fast-track property tax payments

Chennai: Considering the delays in property tax collections during the poll season, Greater Chennai Corporation has enabled QR code-based payment for people to scan and pay property tax. The QR code is available on GCC’s X handle and website (chennaicorporation.gov.in/gcc/online-payment/property-tax). Officials said they couldn’t do door-to-door collection in the past month as staff were involved in poll duty.City revenue officer K Magesh said they have an annual revenue target of 900 crore and they have collected 511 crore so far through online payments. “We will resume physical collections only after the election results come in. Scanning the QR will help fast-track the drive to get the remaining 400 crore,” he said. The civic body has more than 14 lakh assessees. “In the same period last year, we collected about 506 crore,” said Magesh.GCC has an annual tax demand of 1,800 crore. Deputy mayor Mahesh Kumar said they have dues of about 120 crore for long-term defaults. “We have to collect this by Oct. GCC released a list of 100 defaulters, after which about 70 crore was paid,” he said.During the previous financial year, many taxpayers opted for early payment to benefit from incentives, especially in the second half, from Oct to March. GCC collected its highest amount of property tax, exceeding the 2,000 crore in 2024-2025. Revenue officials said property taxpayers have gotten incentives of 5% if they made payments before April 30.
