CHANDIGARH: A family dispute over marriage and money turned fatal early Friday when a 19-year-old allegedly shot his father dead at their Sector 22 home.Nitin, 45, a head constable with the Chandigarh Police, was sleeping at his govt accommodation in Sector 22 around 4.30am on Friday when his 19-year-old son, Armaan, shot him in the temple, killing him on the spot.The youth then allegedly turned on his mother, Monika, an ASI with the UT police, who was asleep in another room.After failing to shoot her when the firearm stalled, he allegedly tried to strangle her. He then dragged her towards the bathroom, but she managed to escape to the terrace and call for help, police said.Neighbours broke the door open and found Nitin’s body on the bed. Police received information around 7.30am, following which a PCR team and personnel from Sector 17 police station reached the spot.
Prior arrest
A murder case was registered against Armaan on the statement of Monika, who was taken to hospital. Armaan was arrested.Police said Armaan, the only son of Nitin and Monika, had become addicted to drugs. He had reportedly been living with a woman from Khatouli village in Panchkula for the past few years. The woman is allegedly pregnant.Police said Armaan brought the woman to meet his parents two days before the murder and insisted on marrying her. He also allegedly demanded Rs 10 lakh, saying he wanted to start a private business.The parents initially opposed the marriage, sparking an argument. They later gave in and agreed to the marriage after the intervention of relatives.Police said Armaan had been staying at home since Sept 23 and had allegedly brought a country-made pistol and two cartridges from Haridwar, Uttarakhand. Sector 17 police recovered the firearm and ammunition from the house.During initial questioning, Armaan allegedly tried to mislead police by saying that an unidentified youth had entered the house, shot his father and fled.He allegedly told the police that he had hidden in the bathroom to save himself. Later, inconsistencies emerged in his version and he eventually admitted to shooting his father, police said.Besides the murder, police are investigating Armaan’s alleged links to a road accident near Kalagram light point in Feb. In the accident, two persons riding a bike were killed after being hit by a Thar SUV reportedly driven by Armaan.He was arrested in the case and later released on bail.
