New Delhi: Delhi govt Friday informed the high court that it has set up a high-powered committee to examine issues concerning students’ accommodation and their safety in the city and recommend time-bound measures.A bench of Chief Justice DK Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia, hearing a PIL regarding the Satya Niketan PG building collapse, was also informed by Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) that immediately after the Sept 6 incident, five officials across its supervisory chain, including a deputy commissioner, were suspended.When the court termed the affidavit filed by Delhi University “absolutely vague”, the DU counsel assured it that a better response would be filed.Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing Delhi govt, MCD and Delhi Police, submitted details of other actions taken by the authorities. MCD said no sanctioned building plan was approved for the property. A time-bound survey of paying guest buildings across its 12 zones was undertaken, and out of 2,453 PG buildings, 2,342 were visibly safe, 91 need minor and 30 major repair, and four were in dangerous condition, it stated.Meanwhile, HC permitted retired IPS officer Kiran Bedi to address it in the matter and listed the case on Oct 14.
