For a language that has been spoken along Karnataka’s coast for centuries, Tulu’s latest milestone marks a significant new chapter. The Karnataka Cabinet has accorded Tulu the status of the state’s second additional official language in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, fulfilling a long-standing demand for greater recognition of the language. For actors and filmmakers with roots in Tulunadu, however, Tulu represents more than official recognition.A recognition of coastal cultureThe recognition of Tulu is a moment of pride not just for the language, but for the entire coastal region.
