Bengaluru: Panic broke out near a private clinic in JP Nagar 3rd Phase Thursday morning after a 26-year-old nurse was allegedly chased and attacked with a machete and acid by her husband following a marital dispute, leaving shocked onlookers and passersby trying to save her and fleeing for safety amid the sudden assault.Eventually, a traffic police sub-inspector from JP Nagar traffic police station fought the man and saved Madhumita Maity, a resident of a paying guest accommodation in south Bengaluru and a native of Kolkata. Maity, who has sustained injuries, had been working as a nurse at Narayana Clinic for 18 months.Based on the preliminary investigation, police said that around 9.15am, she had stepped out for breakfast when her husband, Venkatesan, 39, a native of Madurai in Tamil Nadu, chased her to the clinic parking area in the basement of the multistorey building.Venkatesan rode more than 425 km to from Madurai on a scooter. He had carried a machete, a knife and an acid bottle. He waited for Madhumita to come out of the clinic and soon after spotting her, he chased and confronted her on the basement down ramp. Venkatesan, wearing a helmet, immediately shouted at her, threw acid used for floor cleaning and pushed her to the floor. Madhumita reportedly raised an alarm, prompting the hospital staff and locals to intervene.Madhumita suffered severe injuries on her head. A few people tried to protect her and themselves by hitting the accused with stones, but he attempted to attack them as well.Traffic SI fights VenkatesanA traffic sub-inspector, Venkatesh K, attached to JP Nagar traffic police, along with his colleague, head constable Madhu, was on duty nearby. They heard people shouting and rushed to the spot. Venkatesh tried to stop Venkatesan at the basement while he tried to flee.Venkatesan brandished the machete at Venkatesh. As he was repeatedly trying to attack the duo of cops, Venkatesh ran inside the basement and found bamboo logs. He brought a log and hit Venkatesan, making him drop the machete. Soon, Venkatesh caught Venkatesan. The angered crowd requested Venkatesh to hand over the attacker to them as they wanted to teach him a lesson. A few persons assaulted Venkatesan. The PSI controlled the crowd and told them to stay away as he was taking him to the police station.Venkatesh hired an autorickshaw and took the attacker to JP Nagar law and order police station. Madhumita is undergoing treatment at a private hospital, and her condition is critical.JP Nagar police inspected the spot. A case of attempt to murder has been registered. Venkatesan, a private oil firm employee, has also suffered injuries and is undergoing treatment at another hospital. Police are questioning him to ascertain the exact motive behind the attack. He confessed that he purchased a machete, knife and acid in TN.Deputy commissioner (South) Kona Vamsi Krishna said Madhumita and Venkatesan got married in 2023 in Madurai and have been living separately for a year over a marital dispute.
