Yamunanagar: The anti-narcotics cell of the Yamunanagar police on Monday claimed to have arrested two persons, including the main supplier, and seized 6,000 narcotic tablets from their possession.The police said the tablets were being transported illegally without any supporting documents.The arrested accused include Ashu Gupta, a resident of Azad Nagar, Yamunanagar, and Shailender, a resident of Rampur Khadar village. A case was registered against the two under the NDPS Act, and they were produced before a court on Tuesday, which remanded them to police custody.Shailender allegedly runs a hospital near Nathanpur village bus stand in Yamunanagar.Addressing the medipersons, DSP Rajat Gulia said the arrests were made under the guidance of SP Kamaldeep Goyal. The action was part of the district police’s ongoing crackdown on drug trafficking.According to the police, Anil Kumar, in charge of the anti-narcotics cell, received information that a youth would arrive in Yamunanagar on a motorcycle carrying intoxicating and prohibited medicines. Acting on the tip-off, a team comprising SI Ashish Kumar, ASI Rajinder Singh, head constables Pankaj, Amit, Ravi, Sonu and Manjit was formed, and a checkpoint was set up near Chuna Bhatti in Jagadhri.After some time, police spotted a youth approaching from the Chhachhrauli side while riding a motorcycle. On seeing the police, he attempted to flee, but the team chased and apprehended him.Police searched the suspect in the presence of the duty magistrate, ETO Virender Kumar, and recovered prohibited medicines from him.Police also sought a report from drug controller Dr Bindu Sharma, who confirmed that the seized medicines comprised 6,000 narcotic tablets. The suspect could not produce any documents authorising their possession or transportation.During interrogation, Ashu told the police he obtained the prohibited medicines from Shailender; subsequently, Shailender was also arrested.Police said preliminary investigation revealed that Shailender had been running a hospital near Nathanpur bus stand. Police are also examining the legality of the establishment and whether the hospital was operating without the required permissions.Police are now investigating the source of the tablets, their intended destination and the network through which the prohibited medicines were being supplied.Anil Kumar said further details regarding the supply chain would emerge during the investigation.
