BENGALURU: A local court in Bengaluru held a 49-year-old man guilty of peddling drugs and sentenced him to 10 years’ rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1 lakh.The convict, K Bhagirath Devasi of Devanahalli, was caught red-handed with 2kg of opium in Girinagar in July 2021.Then police inspector Deepak L had received concrete information that Devasi would arrive on his bike and stand near an Indira Canteen in Banashankari III Stage to sell opium to consumers. A police team raided the place and caught Devasi with the opium.Also read: Why state’s drug battle loses its punch in court?Passing the order and stressing the evidence provided by the investigating officers, Judge Ananda observed, “The evidence of prosecution witnesses (police in this case) establishes the circumstances in which the accused was apprehended, his connection with the two-wheeler, the recovery of the plastic cover from the dickey and the seizure of the substance weighing 2 kilograms 140 grams of Opium. His (raiding police officer) evidence is not merely that a narcotic substance was found somewhere at the spot; rather, it connects the accused with the vehicle and the substance recovered from its dickey. Further, evidence by assistant commissioner of police, Srinivas, Jayanagar sub-division essentially corroborates the evidence of police officials who carried the raid and apprehended the accused.”Public prosecutor Sri Vani said scientifically seizing the opium and sending it to the forensic science laboratory for testing was an important measure taken by the investigating police.“Police has to follow guidelines while trapping the suspects in drug case, seizing other relevant materials, submitting statements of witnesses…etc. All the guidelines were followed properly in this case,” she said.
