Aizawl: Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) expects to restore the rain-damaged Jamira-Bairabi track by Sept 14, an official said Thursday.NFR chief public relations officer Kapinjal Kishore Sharma said, “Restoration work at the affected location between Jamira and Bairabi is progressing well. NFR is confident of restoring the track by Sept 14. Men and machinery have been deployed at the site, and work is continuing round the clock.”All trains to and from Sairang station, on the western outskirts of Aizawl, have been cancelled since Sept 4. Services on the Sairang-Kolkata, Sairang-Guwahati, Sairang-Silchar, Sairang-Bairabi, Guwahati-Sairang, Silchar-Bairabi and Bairabi-Silchar routes remain cancelled, while some trains have been short-originated or short-terminated at Hailakandi in Assam.Heavy rain triggered soil erosion on the evening of Sept 3, damaging the track between Jamira in Assam and Bairabi in Mizoram. About 70 metres of track and an area extending up to 40 metres from the track centre were affected.The site has no direct road access, complicating restoration work, NFR officials said.Help desks at Guwahati, Lumding, Naharlagun, Badarpur and Sairang are providing information, ticketing assistance and other support.
