Govt official dies after consuming acid in Veraval

Rajkot: A 35-year-old Class II govt officer, Sunil Chaudhary, died while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Rajkot on Sep 5, a day after he allegedly consumed acid at his rented house on Dabhor Road in Veraval city of Gir Somnath district.Chaudhary was initially rushed to a private hospital in Veraval after his condition deteriorated. He was later shifted to a hospital in Rajkot for further treatment where he succumbed to injuries.According to police sources, Chaudhary was serving as an assistant project officer in the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) at Gir Somnath district panchayat building.Veraval city police inspector J N Gadhvi told TOI that Chaudhary’s dying declaration was recorded after he consumed the acid.In his statement, recorded in the presence of a mamlatdar and others, Chaudhary reportedly said that he had accidentally consumed the acid when he went to the bathroom to bathe on Sep 4.Police said postmortem and other necessary procedures were carried out in Rajkot following his death.They added that Chaudhary’s wife was the one who took him to the private hospital for treatment.Police officials said that they were not fully convinced that Chaudhary accidentally consumed acid.
