Guwahati: Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi on Sunday welcomed Bhupesh Baghel’s appointment as the party’s Assam in charge.“We in Assam look forward to working with AICC GS Shri @bhupeshbaghel ji. His experience and guidance will be invaluable for us. I am grateful to Shri @JitendraSAlwar for his stewardship and mentorship of the party in the recent past,” Gaurav wrote in a social media post on Sunday.Baghel thanked the All India Congress Committee (AICC) leadership for entrusting him with the responsibility.The appointment was part of an organisational reshuffle announced by the AICC on Saturday. Baghel replaced Jitendra Singh as the party’s Assam in charge.Singh stepped down after Congress’s defeat in the last Assembly elections, the results of which were declared in early May this year. Taking responsibility for the outcome, Singh resigned after Congress recorded its worst-ever performance in Assam, winning 19 seats in the 126-member assembly.The post has remained vacant since then.Baghel earlier served as one of the AICC’s senior observers during the last Assam assembly elections, along with Karnataka chief minister D K Shivakumar and senior Jharkhand Congress leader Bandhu Tirkey.
