Three get 15-year RI in Guwahati drug case

Guwahati: A special NDPS court in Guwahati has sentenced three men to 15 years’ rigorous imprisonment for possessing more than 2 kg of methamphetamine tablets.The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) said the accused—Shakil Khan of Thoubal district and Yahiya Khan of Imphal East district in Manipur, and Mithilesh Kumar of Bhagalpur district in Bihar—were arrested after the contraband was seized from them on VIP Road near Six Mile on Oct 14, 2020.The NCB Guwahati Zonal Unit registered a case under relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. After completing its investigation, the agency filed a complaint before the competent court on April 8, 2021.Special Judge, NDPS, Kamrup (Metropolitan), Guwahati, convicted the three in a judgment delivered on Sept 3.“The trio has been convicted and sentenced to 15 years of rigorous imprisonment by a special court in Guwahati. They have been found guilty under various charges of the NDPS Act, 1985,” the NCB said.“Those indulging in organized drug trafficking shall face no sympathy of the court. The menace of narcotics must be dealt with an iron hand to safeguard the youth and protect the society at large,” the agency stated.The NCB said the judgment reaffirmed that drug trafficking is a grave offence against the community and underscored the need for strong action against trafficking networks.
