MOHALI: A private company employee who had come to the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Mohali, to deliver goods died after falling from a freight lift on the institute premises on Wednesday late evening.According to preliminary information, the deceased was an employee of a company that regularly supplies furniture and other goods to IISER Mohali.He had reportedly reached the fourth floor while transporting furniture through a freight lift when he accidentally fell through the lift shaft and sustained critical injuries. He reportedly died at the spot.Sources said the freight lift is meant for transporting goods between different floors.The circumstances in which the employee fell from the lift are yet to be established.Investigators are examining whether he accidentally stepped into an open lift shaft or whether there was another reason behind the fall.The incident occurred while employees of the company were engaged in transporting goods inside the institute.As soon as information about the accident was received, police reached the spot and initiated an investigation.DSP City-II Harsimran Singh Bal said that the police are verifying the identity and details of the deceased, including the company he worked for, his place of residence and the nature of the goods being delivered to IISER.The investigators are also examining the functioning and safety arrangements of the freight lift to determine whether the accident was caused by human error, a technical fault or any possible lapse in safety measures.Police officials said that the exact circumstances leading to the fatal fall would become clear after the preliminary investigation.Further action will be taken on the basis of the findings.
