Chennai: CB-CID cybercrime wing registered a case on Sept 1 after detecting an AI-generated deepfake video impersonating chief minister C Joseph Vijay circulating on social media platforms.The video showed a person resembling Vijay speaking in Hindi, asking people seeking financial assistance to contact a WhatsApp number. The social media centre of the state police alerted CB-CID cybercrime wing about the video, and a case was registered. Subsequently, a cybercrime wing police inspector was assigned to investigate the video.Police sent a request to Meta seeking details of the Facebook ID and logs through which the video was uploaded. The cybercrime wing was working to identify those behind the videos and take legal action against them. Steps were also taken to remove the video from social media platforms.Police suspect that some of the videos had been shared from social media IDs originating in Pakistan. They also appealed to the public not to contact phone numbers mentioned in such videos or join WhatsApp groups linked to them, and not to follow instructions given through such fraudulent messages.
